Dr. Rochling named acting chief of gastroenterology and hepatology

Fedja Rochling, M.D.

Fedja Rochling, M.D., associate professor in the UNMC Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine, has been named acting chief of the division, effective Sept. 1.

Dr. Rochling will replace Mark Mailliard, M.D., who recently stepped down. Dr. Mailliard served as chief since 2004 and will continue as an active member of the section.

“I am grateful that Dr. Rochling is willing to take on the role of acting chief,” said Debra Romberger, M.D., Henry J. Lehnhoff Professor and chair, Department of Internal Medicine. “He has already had leadership experience at the Omaha VA Medical Center as chief of the GI section there and will be helping us move forward at UNMC and Nebraska Medicine as we continue the national search for a permanent chief.”

Dr. Romberger said the department is grateful for Dr. Mailliard’s 14 years of service. “He has led the group through a period of much clinical demand while promoting the education of fellows and maintaining his active research program around the treatment of hepatitis C,” she said.

Dr. Rochling said he is honored to have the opportunity to lead the division. “UNMC gastroenterology and hepatology has a long tradition of excellence in education, patient care and research,” he said. “The challenges in this constantly changing health care and research environment are well known.

“With the help from the highly motivated academic support staff, our clinical and basic science faculty will continue to create an environment where medical students, residents and fellows find a home to learn and care for patients with complex gastrointestinal illnesses.”
