UNMC alum displays his artwork at UNO

Criss Library Osborne Family Gallery and the Weber Fine Arts Gallery, on the Dodge Street campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, opens the 2018-19 semester with two special exhibitions at the same time on Friday, Aug. 24 — including one with a UNMC tie.

Mark Gilbert, Ph.D.’s “Portraits of Care, Art and Medicine” exhibition will open in the Criss Library Osborne Family Gallery. Dr. Gilbert, a UNMC alum, is an artist, teacher and researcher currently serving as a research associate with the faculty of medicine at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

His work explores the relationship between the humanities and medicine and its application in medical education. He earned a B.A. in Fine Art from Glasgow School of Art, and his Ph.D. in the Medical Sciences Interdepartmental Area (MSIA) program at UNMC. He was an artist-in-residence at The Royal London Hospital, England, collaborating with a maxilla facial surgeon and patients as an integral part of their care programming along with dialogue and writing.

The Weber Art Gallery will open with a special exhibition of art faculty from Iowa State University. The exhibit will feature the works of Brent Holland, Brenda Jones, April Katz, Chuck Richards and Barbara Walton.

Both gallery receptions are open to the public and will be from 4:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 with refreshments being served in the Criss Library Osborne Family Gallery. Each exhibit will be up until Sept. 28.
