The west end of Parking Lot 17 — one of the largest surface parking lots on the UNMC/Nebraska Medicine campus — will be closing Monday for asphalt resurfacing and will remain closed (weather permitting) through Tuesday, Aug. 14.
The area of the parking lot that will be impacted is between Annex 22 (the mailroom facility) and Annex 23 (the grounds facility), said Archie Carpenter, construction project manager for UNMC Facilities Management and Planning.
Lot 17 includes more than 500 parking spaces, Carpenter said, but the resurfacing project will only involve about one-third of the lot.
People parking in Lot 17 have been notified of the resurfacing project, he said, and will be shifted to other campus parking lots until the project is completed.
Carpenter said the resurfacing of the west end of Lot 17 is one of the final phases of work being done on the lot.
“We’re almost done,” he said. “We want everyone to hang in there. We will have all the work done in Lot 17 before school begins on Aug. 20.”
When completed, Carpenter said, people parking in Lot 17 will have a “safer parking lot.”
“New LED lights will be added as well as two pedestrian walkways that will lead to the stairway that goes up to Lot 50 (the multi-level parking structure on Emile Street at 45th Street).”
Will the entrance from Saddlecreek be open during this phase?
Melissa,
Thank you for the question. Access from Saddle Creek will remain open. However it will be congested with construction traffic. It would be best if you access Lot 17 from Jones Street (Quick Trip) or from 45th and Leavenworth.
