Science of beer is topic of July 10 Omaha Science Cafe

Tony Thomas (left) and Phil Doerr

Tony Thomas and Phil Doerr will discuss home brewing at the next Omaha Science Café at 7 p.m. on July 10 at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.

Starting out as home brewers, Thomas and Doerr spent years perfecting their craft, both at home and in commercial breweries, founding the South Omaha Brewers Homebrew Club.

Along with their wives, they began a journey to explore brewing and beer styles all over the world. After traveling to Germany, Belgium, the Czech Republic and to more than half of the states in the U.S., doing research and meeting some of the leading brewing experts in the world, they decided that it could be more than just a hobby. Thus, Farnam House Brewing Company was born.

Science Cafés involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone (21 and older) and take place in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a Q-and-A period.

Pizza will be provided for the first 50 people. For more information about Science Cafes, go to www.unmc.edu/sciencecafe.
