New lactation room gets decoration

Holding the artwork for the new lactation room are, from left, Melissa Mathes, M.D., Stacia Kennedy, lead lactation consultant for Nebraska Medicine, and Tessa Delaney, second-year medical student and outgoing president of the Luikart Society.

New artwork will soon decorate the newest lactation room on campus, thanks to the Luikart Society, an interdisciplinary women’s health interest group.

To purchase the artwork, the Luikart Society raised $600 from a 5K run last August. Melissa Mathes, M.D., house officer, OB/GYN, helped organize the run when she was a medical student. She said the group hopes the run becomes an annual event.

The room, remodeled from a women’s locker room, is located on the east end of University Tower’s fourth floor and is expected to open this summer.

The Luikart Society has evolved from a medical student women’s health interest group into an interdisciplinary group focused on creating a women’s health community on campus. The 5K run was organized to raise funds for the Lactation Committee that advocates for more mother’s rooms on campus.

Stacia Kennedy, lead lactation consultant, women’s services, Nebraska Medicine, said the number of lactation rooms for staff, patients and hospital visitors has increased over the past three years.

“Our goal is to provide a mother’s room on every floor of every building within 100 feet of any workplace,” she said.

Here is a list of all the Mother’s Rooms on campus.
