More than 300 colleagues, friends and family celebrated the life of Jarrod Dye, MD, a third-year internal medicine house officer, at a campus memorial service on March 7. Fond memories and stories were shared, with a common theme among those who knew him of "I'm changed because Jarrod cared."
Dr. Dye, a provider at Nebraska Medicine – Midtown, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 28. Many residents attended all the memorial services, including traveling the 11 hours to Kennett, Mo. for the funeral service.
"The respect and love his colleagues had for Jarrod was evident," said James O’Dell, MD, residency program director for internal medicine. "I want to acknowledge and thank the incredible efforts on the part of the residents to support each other and Arlene, Jarrod’s wife."
Dr. O’Dell also praised the response of the internal medicine faculty. "They not only supported the residents emotionally but also physically by covering their services and by donating generously to the GoFundMe campaign to help defer some expenses for Arlene," he said.
Dr. O’Dell said that support for the residents, the faculty and the department will continue.
"We are here to help each other through the grieving process and to move forward," he said.
