A major renovation and expansion project to the Outpatient Pharmacy, located on level two of the Durham Outpatient Center (DOC), is underway.
Phase one of the two-phase project is set to take five months. The first phase calls for construction barrier walls in the main corridor outside the Outpatient Pharmacy location. It is expected that construction will result in some inconveniences affecting patients as well as pharmacy workflow.
For example, the current customer waiting area in the pharmacy will be reduced during the renovation. Additional seating for waiting customers will be available around the corner from the pharmacy in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Phase two of the project will begin in August and go through December.
“We will also have less pick-up and drop-off stations available during construction,” said Vincent Jorn, director, community-based pharmacy services at Nebraska Medicine. “The pharmacy staff will be working to keep increased wait times to a minimum, but it will be challenging during peak hours of operation.”
Jorn added that the temporary inconveniences will be worth it for patients and colleagues when work is complete. Upon completion, the existing 2,860-square feet of the Outpatient Pharmacy location will expand to 7,400-square feet.
“The Outpatient Pharmacy location has been in need of renovation and expansion to help us better serve our patients,” Jorn said. “We’re excited that the finished product will result in improved aesthetics, updated technologies, improved privacy, increased capacity, increased safety, and a streamlined design and workflow to improve wait times.”
In addition to the DOC, there is another pharmacy location on the med center campus in the Lauritzen Outpatient Center. Pharmacy also offers free shipping of prescriptions for patients and colleagues.
