Students honored, hooded at winter convocation

UNMC Graduate Studies feted 43 August and December 2017 graduates at its recent winter honors convocation. The M.S. and Ph.D. candidates were hooded by their mentors at a Dec. 14 ceremony at the Durham Museum.

Crystal Epstein, Ph.D., and Megan Bosch were recognized as Graduate Students of Distinction, leading a host of their colleagues also honored for the awards and scholarships earned during Graduate Studies careers at UNMC.

UNMC alumnus Christine Cutucache, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, delivered the keynote address. Dr. Cutuchache urged the class of 2017 to look at their career through a series of “lenses”:

  • A telescope, for long-range plans and goals;
  • Binoculars, for more immediate plans;
  • Reading glasses, to zero in on the small details;
  • Sunglasses to keep out distractions;
  • and a mirror, for self-reflection, and to see yourself as others do.

“We must learn to use different tools for different jobs,” Dr. Cutucache said.
