Dr. Suh promotes UNMC innovations at Qatar event

Donny Suh, M.D.

Donny Suh, M.D., associate professor in the UNMC Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science, spoke in February at the Fourth Qatar International Ophthalmology Conference in Doha, Qatar.

Dr. Suh, who also serves as chief of pediatric ophthalmology and adult strabismus at Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, spoke on three topics:

  • an eye muscle surgical technique that was developed and published by Dr.Suh and his colleagues from Johns Hopkins and Harvard;
  • current understanding of shaken baby syndrome, presenting his current research and publications he is involved with UNMC, iEXCEL and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln; and
  • his new inventions that are being developed in conjunction with UNeMed, UNMC and UNL, including precision syringes, new surgical needle drivers and new surgical forceps.

Dr. Suh was one of more than a dozen speakers at the two-day event.

Qatar’s medical community has grown enormously, Dr. Suh said, and its Hamad Medical Corporation — a government-operated medical center and the sponsor of the conference — is one of the leaders in the Middle Eastern medical community.

This year, the bi-annual meeting’s focus was innovations in ophthalmology.

Attendees were excited about his presentation, he said.

“The response was overwhelmingly positive.”

He also fielded a lot of questions about Nebraska from other attendees.

“They don’t get too many speakers from the Midwest, so whenever they hear of a medical center they’re not familiar with, they’re always interested,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity to raise UNMC’s profile and look for opportunities for collaboration in the future.”

Dr. Suh already has been invited for the next conference in Qatar.

“I would love to see other professionals from UNMC attend,” he said.
