Bruce Currin, the associate vice president for human resources for the University of Nebraska, sent a message this week to university employees explaining the impact of changes in the tax law in regard to parking costs.
“As a result of the recent tax law bill passed by Congress, there is an immediate change to a tax benefit program you may have used for parking costs,” Currin said in the letter. “If you had parking costs automatically deducted from your paycheck, that deduction was made before payroll taxes were withheld. This means that your parking costs reduced your taxable gross income.
“To adhere to the new tax law, effective immediately, your payroll deductions for parking will no longer reduce your taxable gross income. This will result in a change to the amount of your total take-home pay. We will continue to deduct your parking costs from your paycheck, but those costs will be paid with ‘post-tax,’ not ‘pre-tax’ dollars.”
