Events will mark Black History Month at UNMC

A series of events are planned in February as UNMC recognizes Black History Month.

The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Office of Multicultural Affairs has scheduled a number of events marking Black History Month at UNO. For a list of events, click here.

The university will host a “Gospel Fest” celebration to mark the month on Thursday, Feb. 1. The celebration will feature gospel music from local artists and musicians, and also will include poetry/spoken-word performances. The performance will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Durham Outpatient Center West Atrium.

UNMC’s popular Music as Medicine series will donate the piano for the performance.

Also in recognition of Black History Month, soul food will be available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Nebraska Cafe and Clarkson Cafes on Feb. 1 and Feb. 13.

The menu will include:

  • mac and cheese;
  • fresh sweet potatoes with brown sugar and pecans on top;
  • Collard greens with smoked turkey;
  • green beans with diced potatoes;
  • fried catfish;
  • Corn bread;
  • meatloaf; and
  • pecan and sweet potato pie.

On Feb. 6, UNMC is collaborating with local nonprofit, Inclusive Communities, to be a host site for the main Table Talk event on Feb. 6. the talk is part of a citywide dialogue on race and identity that will take place simultaneously at various locations across the city, including UNMC and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Later in the month, The Rev. Darryl C. Eure will give a Feb. 21 presentation titled “The Struggle for Equality in Omaha,” at noon in the Durham Research Center, Room 1004.

And on Feb. 26, Eric Ewing, executive director of the Great Plains Black History Museum, will give a presentation on “The History and Origins of Artifacts – Great Plains Black History Museum” at noon in the Durham Research Center, Room 1006. A collection of artifacts from the museum will be on display.
