Dr. Shillcutt selected as speaker for YP Summit on March 1

Sasha Shillcut, MD, associate professor, anesthesiology, will be a breakout speaker for the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce’s YP (young professionals) Summit on March 1 at the CenturyLink Center. She will discuss the importance of a growth mindset in overcoming setbacks and describe how resilience is a key factor in professional success and personal confidence. Nebraska Medicine is one of the sponsors of this year’s summit. Find out more about the YP Summit. 

Dr. Schenarts to receive Distinguished Master Educator Award 

P.J. Schenarts, MD, professor, surgery-general surgery, has been selected to receive the Distinguished Master Educator Award from the Association for Surgical Education (ASE), arguably the highest national award in surgical education.  The Distinguished Master Educator Award is given annually to advanced career clinicians and/or MS/PhD educators who have demonstrated excellence as master educators recognized on the national and/or international level. In addition to recognized skills as an excellent teacher, nominees for this award must have an education portfolio with clear documentation of consistent educational scholarship and significant contributions to surgical education that are recognized to have national and/or international impact. He will be recognized at the ASE annual meeting to be held May 1-5 in Austin, Texas.

Emergency Medicine research abstract wins award at national meeting

A research abstract tied to the UNMC Department of Emergency Medicine received an award at the annual meeting of the National Association of EMS Physicians in San Diego earlier this month. The award was for the "Best Student/Resident/Fellow Presentation." The project was titled, "Training in Prehospital Death Notifications Linked to Improved Provider Comfort and Preparation."

Abraham Campos, MD, a former emergency medicine resident at UNMC, was the lead investigator on the project. Dr. Campos is currently doing a fellowship in emergency medicine and will return to UNMC in July to become a full-time faculty member in emergency medicine. Eric Ernest, MD, assistant professor, emergency medicine, also played a key role in the project.  

UNMC graduate student one of 15 selected to participate in Early-career Hill Day

Kimiko Krieger, a fourth-year graduate student in the lab of Nick Woods, PhD, interim director of the Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Core Facility, has been selected as one of only 15 people to participate in Early-career Hill Day through the American Association for Cancer Research. She will go to Washington, D.C. on March 6-7 to engage and educate key congressional leadership regarding the needs of cancer researchers, particularly those early in their careers.  

McGoogan's Schleicher honored with fellowship, elected to board

John Schleicher, associate professor at the McGoogan Library of Medicine, was recently named a Fellow of the Center for Great Plains Studies. Fellows come from any of the four campuses of the University of Nebraska system, with research focusing on the people and culture of the Great Plains.

In addition, Schleicher was recently elected chair of the board of Humanities Nebraska. Humanities Nebraska inspires and enriches personal and public life by offering opportunities to thoughtfully engage with history and culture.

UNMC will host Society of Student-Run Free Clinics Conference

UNMC will host the 2018 annual national conference of the Society of Student-Run Free Clinics Feb. 24-25 at the Sorrell Center. Students and faculty involved in the SHARING Clinics from the colleges of medicine, allied health professions, public health, pharmacy and nursing will serve as hosts for the interprofessional conference, which presents separate tracks for students and faculty. The conference will consist of workshops, poster presentations, and oral presentations where students and faculty get an opportunity to present their clinic models with student-run free clinics from various institutions.
