Chuck Hassebrook, former member of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents and a candidate for a legislative seat representing northeast Nebraska’s District 16, toured UNMC earlier this month.

Hassebrook met with university leaders and toured the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center and the iEXCEL Visualization Hub during his visit.

“I’ve always had great respect for the work of the medical center and respect for the fact that it has always been committed to taking its expertise out to small towns and rural communities to support and strengthen health care across the state,” said Hassebrook, of Lyons, Neb.

Hassebrook said he was particularly impressed by the Simulation in Motion-Nebraska program training vehicles, which enable UNMC to provide training for EMS volunteers in rural areas.

“It’s really challenging for many of our volunteers out here in rural Nebraska,” Hassebrook said. “Many of them have a full-time job, sometimes two, and they’ve also made a commitment to serve their community by being on the rescue squad. To take these vehicles out and enable these folks to get the latest in training has great value.”

Hassebrook called UNMC, and the University of Nebraska system as a whole, critical to the future of the state.

“What has made the medical center such a treasure is not only the top-notch research and training taking place within its own walls in Omaha, but that it has always been committed to taking that work out beyond its walls to serve the people of Nebraska,” he said.

“It’s an incredible resource for the whole state of Nebraska — the medical center and university in general are important investments in the future of Nebraska.”
