Retirement tea Thursday for Kathy Sova

Kathy Sova

The Division of General Internal Medicine will host a retirement tea in honor of Kathy (McCormack) Sova on Thursday, January 25, from 2-4 p.m. in University Tower Private Dining Room C.

Sova joined UNMC in 1974 as a receptionist at the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute. In 1978 she transferred to radiology, providing administrative assistance to radiologists Roger Harned, M.D., and Charles Dobry, M.D.

In 1988, she joined general internal medicine and in her current position provides administrative assistance to Division Chief Thomas Tape, M.D., and other faculty members in the division.

“Kathy has provided loyal and excellent service,” said Mary Slowik, administrator for general internal medicine. “We greatly appreciate her 43 years of dedication to both UNMC and general internal medicine.”

“From the time we first started working together nearly 30 years ago, Kathy impressed me with the ability to get things done,” Dr Tape said. “She seems to know just about everyone at UNMC and identifies just the right person to help deal with the issue at hand. A quick phone call to one of her many friends and help is on the way.”

Dr. Tape said Sova has “quite literally been the life of the party” for the GIM division, organizing the divisional potluck social events for many years.

“She considers the GIM faculty and staff to be her extended family,” he said. “I have been fortunate to have her as my colleague and friend for most of my time at UNMC and will miss sharing morning tea with her. I wish her the best for a well-deserved retirement with her family — especially her beloved grandsons.”

In retirement, Kathy and her husband Leo plan to travel and spend time with their two grandsons.

    Kathy,
I will miss seeing you when I am down your way meeting with Dr. Tape. I have enjoyed our chats and hearing about your longstanding work at UNMC (and previously at NPI!)

Your commitment to your UNMC 'family' is really commendable — putting on social events like division potlucks is a really important way to contribute to a friendly work environment and I am sure you'll be missed for this and many other things you bring to your work.

I hope you enjoy your retirement!
