We have said goodbye to 2017 and are looking forward to how we will live out 2018. This newsletter highlights a number of honors, awards and achievements that our faculty, trainees, and staff experienced in the last part of 2017. I hope you will take a quick look at those and find a moment to celebrate our remarkable colleagues. We lost one of those special colleagues when Dr. Matoole, an emeritus professor at UNMC and former Chief of Staff at the VA, passed away in early December. He had a huge impact on so many students, residents and faculty and there will be a celebration of his life at the Field Club on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m.
Our clinical programs continue to expand on a regular basis and recent growth in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine is highlighted. The CV Medicine division will soon be located administratively on the 8th floor of the Lied and I know they are looking forward to occupying their new space. In addition, Dr. Richard Gumina is the latest addition to the Division and is busy moving his research program to the campus.
Resident interviews are nearly done and a big thank you to our education staff for their coordination of activities, our Chief Residents for their organizational skills, all the residents and faculty who have provided tours and information and participated in interviews. Of course, a big thank you to our program directors for guiding the work and we look forward to Match Day in March.
We welcome Maria Daniels who joined the department administrative staff in December. Maria will be centrally involved with the newsletter so please feel free to send news items to her at maria.daniels@unmc.edu.
Here’s wishing each of you the best in the new year! I know much work is being done to create our new curriculum for medical students, our investigators continue to push for knowledge that will transform lives, and that great clinical care is provided on a daily basis. Thank you!
