Mary Bills Strand, a former member of the UNMC Board of Counselors, toured the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center last week with a group of 30 Lincoln-area women who were interested in learning more about the care provided and research conducted at the state-of-the-art facility.
Director Ken Cowan, M.D., Ph.D., welcomed the group and lunched with them following the tour.
Strand said she arranged the tour after members of her “Random Acts of Kindness” group expressed interest. She said she was pleased at the number of women who wanted to come.
Strand herself had not toured the facility since it was under construction.
“I think there are a lot of incredible things happening here,” she said. “I wanted to provide the group a chance to learn about what is happening in cancer research right here in Nebraska.
“Even when I toured during the construction, I thought this was spectacular,” she said. “More people need to know about the care and research that goes on here.”
The group also was interested in learning about the Healing Arts Program that was incorporated into the cancer center, she said.
“Once they saw and understood the philosophy of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, the artwork was given even more meaning and beauty,” she said.
