Research/professional interests:
I am interested in understanding and combating drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum, one of five Plasmodium species that cause malaria in humans. Malaria kills half a million people per year, and resistance has emerged to all clinical drugs. I’d like to explore targeting the protein degradation systems in P. falciparum, which possesses homologues to the eukaryotic 26S proteasome, the prokaryotic proteasome, and the cyanobacterial ClpP protease. I’m also interested in understanding the role of ubiquitin in signaling processes, including directing proteins for proteasome-mediated degradation, in relation to drug resistance.
Education:
I received an international baccalaureate diploma while at Taipei American School (high school), a bachelor of art’s degree in biology from Barnard College of Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences from Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
How I fell in love with scientific research:
I find beauty in understanding our natural world, and the myriad facets of biology fascinate me.
