COM Resident of the Month

Name: Brittany Brown, M.D.

Medical school you attended/year you graduated: UNMC from 2010-2014

Residency/Fellowship at UNMC:

My UNMC residency is in anesthesiology (2014-2018). I recently found out that I matched at UNMC/Children's Hospital & Medical Center for a one-year fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology.

Program Director: Jean Simonson M.D., M.A.C.M.

How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC:

Anesthesiology residency is four years and consists of one preliminary year and three years of clinical anesthesiology training. Including medical school, I've been at UNMC for seven years.

What do you like the most about your training program:

There are so many great aspects of our program that it is hard to narrow down, but if I had to choose just one, it would be the people. From my co-residents to the faculty and all of the staff, each person wants you to succeed and will go out of their way to help you. The department truly feels like an extended family.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future:

I think one of the biggest challenges will be integrating the use of digital technology while maintaining fulfilling and sincere patient relationships. The doctor-patient relationship is built on trust, empathy and shared experiences. With diagnoses and statistics at our fingertips, it can be easy to lose touch with our patients. Students and residents of the future will need to cultivate these relationships while seamlessly utilizing medical technology to provide optimal patient care.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

Traveling to Africa for a global health initiative where we completed 33 partial thyroidectomies in five days.

Serving as a resident representative on the Graduate Medical Education Committee.

Being elected as co-chief resident.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

I've never eaten at Taco Bell.

I had such an awful lisp growing up that I needed speech therapy until 6th grade.

While in Rwanda, I had the opportunity to hike through the jungle to see a family of silverback gorillas in their natural habitat.
