November presentations by global health and policy expert guest speakers for the interdisciplinary Global Health Seminar will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the College of Public Health, Room 2001. All faculty, staff and students are invited.

Nov. 1
Health Systems, Global Universal Health Care
Nizar Wehbi, M.D., assistant professor and acting deputy director of the Center for Health Policy in the UNMC College of Public Health, will present an overview with specifics about universal health care systems, with comparison to our own American system.
Xiaoting Sun, graduate research assistant, health services research & administration, will talk about the effect of continuity of care on preventive services utilization and hospital readmission using the longitudinal National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan.
Global Human Trafficking
Shireen Rajaram, Ph.D., associate professor, health promotion in the UNMC College of Public Health, will speak about trafficking in India.

17-Year Learning Review from Medical Missions Projects
Donny W. Suh, M.D., chief of ophthalmology service, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, and associate professor, pediatrics and the Truhlsen Eye Institute at UNMC. Since 2000, Dr. Suh has been an active volunteer faculty in South America, Europe, Africa and Asia with ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital medical missions.
Neglected Tropical Diseases
Thomas McHale, graduate London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, has a master’s degree in public health and is in his fourth year of medical school at UNMC. His commitment to service extends to homeless, uninsured patients and orphaned populations in Botswana, Bolivia, Columbia and American inner cities.

Experience with International Programs
Sheila Ryan, Ph.D., professor of nursing and the director of International Programs at UNMC’s College of Nursing. The Charlotte Peck Leinemann and Distinguished Alumni Endowed Chair, Dr. Ryan’s expertise focuses on helping faculty and students expand opportunities with internet-based education, quality improvement and international partnerships. International nursing partner projects have been with three universities in China, one each in Norway, Sweden, Jordan and Oman and other partner projects with Nicaragua, Armenia and the Central Asian Republics.
A Global Perspective and Child Marriage and Pregnancy Associated Complications in Syrian Refugees
Nada Alnaji, M.D., is a Ph.D. student in the UNMC College of Public Health. One of four Chamber Scholars, she plans to partner with Relief International-Jordan and work with refugees and displaced persons in Amman, Jordan. Her research involves studying Syrian refugee women and children and the effects of child marriage and pregnancy-related complications on health.

Global Environmental Issues
Nate Bickford, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. His focus areas of interest are agricultural and landscape conservation, aquatic ecology, raptor research and global environmental health advocacy.
Microfinance, income-generation
Sonja Bickford, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of industrial technology at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, specializes in international business with a focus on microfinance and the creation of wealth in underserved communities.
Nepal Response, IT Successes and Continuing Initiatives
Atul Rayamajhi, director of information systems for the UNMC College of Public Health, was instrumental in the Medicine Nepal Relief Effort in 2015, including organization and collaboration with UNMC colleagues and with services on the ground in Nepal.
