Fifty-six faculty and staff members were inducted into UNMC’s Interprofessional Academy of Educators (IAE) in a Sept. 14 ceremony.

Of those new inductees, 32 were initiated into the inaugural group of associate members (learners) that consists of students and residents.

It was the second annual induction class for the academy, which was created to provide a vibrant interprofessional community of educators who have a passion for furthering UNMC’s educational mission. The academy provides a resource that elevates the level of teaching across all colleges and campuses and shares innovations with UNMC’s alumni and community partners.

Geoffrey Talmon, M.D., director of the academy, said that he is excited for the new group of inductees, especially for the learners. “UNMC is probably the only academic health science center to embrace learners in a big initiative like this. We match them with mentors to develop the next generation of academic teachers.”

While being an academy member is a distinct honor, IAE requires members to give back to UNMC through an annual service requirement, Dr. Talmon said. The involvement of community health care educators is critical to the IAE’s mission, and membership criteria and requirements are designed to be inclusive of all interested in education.

“Already members of the IAE have, either alone or collaboratively, submitted 20 manuscripts, received extramural grants and developed such programs as a preceptor tool kit and a teaching launch pad through one of our eight interest groups,” he said.

Interest groups are designed to bring together educators with similar interests, allowing members to share their talents with one another, develop expertise, and foster scholarly collaboration. Each group is expected to work together in order to accomplish a minimum of two outcomes per academic year.
