Work will begin at 5 p.m. today to replace the floor of the Chihuly Sanctuary inside the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
According to Don Mohlman, senior project manager, facilities management and planning, water came into the sanctuary through an exterior exit doorway on level four of the sanctuary during a rainstorm June 29. The area received four inches of rain.
“The only damage that occurred was to some areas of the wood flooring,” he said. “No artwork was affected inside or outside the sanctuary.”
The wood flooring on level four had been temporarily repaired to allow the sanctuary to be open.
Repairs are expected to take two weeks. Leslie’s Healing Garden and the Chihuly Atrium on the second floor will remain open during the repairs upstairs.
Preventative measures have been taken to ensure any future rain event of such significant magnitude will not result in a similar outcome. That includes the exterior doors to Leslie’s Healing Garden on level two, Mohlman said.
