Talk about your job and what you like best about it:

I am lucky enough to be able to come to work every day and love what I do. The people that I interact with on a daily basis are some of the best people I have ever known and that makes being at work so much more enjoyable. I am an administrator in the College of Medicine, Surgery Department. I work with two very busy divisions – plastic surgery and neurosurgery.

I have been at UNMC for 10 years this year. Together with the physicians, I manage the overall financial and administrative needs of the divisions. Health care is so dynamic and ever-changing; we are tasked with looking into the future to develop strategies that will not only help us to sustain our current successes, but also grow our programs, both academically and clinically.

The best part about my job is making a difference, no matter how small it is. If I help one patient, one physician or one of my staff members every day, I feel like I have accomplished something. I enjoy making things more efficient and love a challenge. The job is always evolving, which I love, and no two days are the same.

Working with two divisions is kind of like having two jobs, so there is definitely no getting bored here! I enjoy working directly with the physicians and interacting with both the academic aspect of the university as well as the clinical component within Nebraska Medicine. Someone told me the first year I worked here, if I made it to 10 years at UNMC, I was a "lifer," so bring on the next 10 years! I look forward to what is to come.

List three things people may not know about you:

1.                  I was born in Kansas and also have lived in New Mexico, Texas and Illinois and have been in Nebraska now for about 17 years. My dad worked for the railroad and growing up I thought that would be a fun job, but chose the path of my mother, in health care instead.

2.                  I collect baseball cards. It started as a collection that was handed down from my father, and I continued to collect them. Some of my most favorites are Jose Canseco, Ken Griffey Jr. and Rickey Henderson. I also have old ones, like Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron.

3.                  I think one of my hobbies is school. I got my BA, MPH and CMPE all while working full-time. I have been in school on and off since high school. I have taken multiple certificate courses and am now working towards my Fellow credential in the American College of Medical Practice Executives (FACMPE). I would then love to pursue my PhD after that.
