Bus shuttle service offered between Omaha, Lincoln

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Engineering is partnering with Arrow Stage Lines to offer N-E Ride, a free bus service between Lincoln and Omaha each weekday for students, faculty and staff, while classes are in session.

Any students and employees within the University of Nebraska system may use the shuttle, with priority given to those in the College of Engineering. The bus service will begin Monday, Aug. 21.

Two buses designed for the College of Engineering will start at Othmer Hall on UNL’s City Campus and the Peter Kiewit Institute on Scott Campus at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. They will stop at UNMC as well as I-80 Exit 439. Capacity for the buses is 40 riders.

Shuttle service begins at 8 a.m., with the last buses leaving at 6 p.m. from Othmer Hall and PKI. Free Wi-Fi is available and no reservations are necessary. The college does not guarantee the shuttles have space for every rider per session; seats are first-come, first-serve. The service is available to those with active IDs from UNL, UNO or UNMC. Riders will be asked to scan their university ID as they embark.

Are the buses going to be running again this year?

Hi, Taija – the UNL College of Engineering shuttle between Omaha and Lincoln has been discontinued. Here’s the announcement we ran in UNMC Today earlier this summer.

College of Engineering’s NE-Ride no longer in service
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Engineering has discontinued its weekday NE-Ride bus service that connected its programs in Lincoln and Omaha. Lance Pérez, PhD, dean of the college, said the service is being halted due to contracted costs doubling ahead of the 2023-24 academic year.

“We are committed to providing access to our programs and facilities in Lincoln and Omaha for our students, faculty and staff,” Dr. Perez said. “We are working to find other cost-effective ways to accommodate our college of engineering community.”

The free shuttle service began in 2015 to support cross-collaboration in courses, research and cocurricular activities between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, UNO’s Scott Campus and UNMC. The service was previously reduced from three round trips daily during the academic year to two in response to increased expenses resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hi, Gabriella. Sorry, but I don’t have an update to share beyond the update above.
