UNO and UNMC partner on Medical English program

Jane Meza, Ph.D., interim associate vice chancellor for global and student support

The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) welcomed a second cohort of English professors from Hainan Medical University (HMU) in Hainan, China, this month for a faculty development program, led by the International Professional Development (IPD) Program at UNO.

In addition to the interactive seminars designed to enhance the professors’ English teaching skills, this year’s program was tailored to assist them in their work as English instructors of medical doctors with custom courses on Medical English and English for Specific Purposes.

One of the critical components of the program is observing UNO courses so that participants can see the principles learned in their program in action. Instructors from the ILUNO Intensive Language Program, the UNO Departments of Foreign Languages, Marketing and Entrepreneurship and Anthropology opened their classrooms to the HMU professors.

UNO and HMU have collaborated on previous language programs, with IPD creating Medical English courses for doctors who are working with UNMC as part of the Medical Education Training Program, coordinated through the UNMC Office of International Relations & Patient Referrals. This program, which brings two cohorts each year, consists of a three-month training course for visiting faculty from HMU, Hainan Province, China. The purpose of this program is to improve the medical teaching skills in English and to learn the modern medical teaching approaches. IPD will join UNMC in working with its fifth cohort this fall.

“This is just one example of our growing collaborations with Hainan Medical University,” said Jane Meza, Ph.D., interim associate vice chancellor for global and student support. “We are honored to assist them with English language training. This is a great example of how our IPD and ILUNO programs can be customized to meet the needs of our clients.”
