Richard Nakamura, Ph.D., director of the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review, will be on the UNMC campus Aug. 21-22.

After spending a day meeting university leaders and touring the campus, Dr. Nakamura will be giving two lectures on Aug. 22, one aimed at graduate students and postdoctoral fellows and the other open to all interested investigators and members of the UNMC community.

At noon on Aug. 22, at the ground-level auditorium of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (Room 0-12101), Dr. Nakamura will speak on “NIH Grant Review Basics and NIH Career Opportunities,” a lecture focused on graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

At 3-4 p.m. that day, he will speak at the Durham Research Center auditorium (Room 1002) on “NIH Scientific Peer Review and Grant Support: Major Changes,” with an open Q&A session to follow.

“As a representative of the National Institutes of Health Center for Scientific Review, Dr. Nakamura’s insights on peer review, career opportunities and other aspects of the grantmaking process will be valuable to many members of the UNMC community,” said Jennifer Larsen, M.D., vice chancellor for research. “We are pleased to offer our students, fellows and investigators this opportunity to hear from and speak with a scientist of Dr. Nakamura’s stature. Please join us.”

Dr. Nakamura had a 32-year career at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), where he has served as both its scientific director and deputy director. He also was acting director of the NIMH from 2001 to 2002. During his time at NIMH, he received a number of leadership awards, including the prestigious Presidential Rank Award.

Both lectures will be livestreamed (see links below). Videoconference rooms that will allow viewers to participate in Q&A sessions on the Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk and Scottsbluff campuses will be announced Aug. 22 in UNMC Today.
