Research/professional interests:

As director of comparative medicine, my job is to maintain an environment that fosters a collaborative, efficient and highly capable service that promotes research while maintaining animal welfare.

The program at UNMC is first class and I am fortunate to work with talented people who are passionate about what they do and share the same vision. It is great fun to come to work each day. My research interests center around comparative pathology — the study of animal and human disease and how they interrelate. Specific areas of previous research include laboratory animal medicine and pathology, wound healing, and vascular and platelet biology.

I am also fortunate to provide leadership for the animal care and use committee (IACUC) office which provides support for the IACUC and researchers to ensure our program at UNMC meets all applicable regulations and guidelines regarding animal care and use. The IACUC office is a team of dedicated professionals who excel at providing service to both researchers and the UNMC community.

How I fell in love with my profession:
I often joke that veterinarians are people who never grew out of “that phase” of their childhood. For me, I cannot remember a time when I did not want to be a veterinarian. I have also had a lifelong interest in science (a bit of a nerd), so it was rather a natural progression in my career to combine veterinary medicine and scientific discovery. The veterinary specialty of Laboratory Animal Medicine is a perfect fit for me.

Degrees:

  • D.V.M., Ross University, Woodbridge, N.J.

  • Ph.D., Pathology, East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine, Greenville, N.C.
  • Board Certification (specialty) in Laboratory Animal Medicine

Three things people may not know about me:

  • Avid woodworker
  • Cyclist (bicycle)
  • Love camping and outdoor activities
