A retirement reception for Marcia Beer is set for Friday from 2-4 p.m. in Private Dining Room A and B. Beer, an accountant in Academic Affairs, is retiring after 41 years of service to UNMC.
Her UNMC memories began in the business office at Meyer Rehabilitation Institute, now MMI. She also worked in International Language and student admissions at UNO.
After a short break in service, she returned to UNMC, in the Educational Therapy Program, through the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute. Then, a long tenure in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. She served under four vice chancellors.
“I’m truly thankful for their mentorship,” she said.
The latest, Dele Davies, M.D., said: “For 41 years, Marcia has provided excellent and dedicated service to UNMC. I have known her as a valued and key member of Academic Affairs, overseeing the budgets and finances of all divisions within the unit. Her budgetary expertise, attention to detail, willingness to go beyond her job description to ensure tasks were completed in a timely and accurate manner are all attributes that were greatly appreciated and will be missed.
“I wish Marcia the very best in her retirement and expect that she will enjoy the extra time she will have to spend with her children and grandchildren. I am also delighted that Marcia helped in selecting her very skilled successor, Joanne Loch, and has been working with her to ensure a smooth transition.”
Beer has many memories of her time at UNMC, but the biggest is still the great blizzard of 1975, when she was unable to leave campus — her car was stuck in the parking lot that is now the Durham Outpatient Center.
“My memories will continue to be that although I was not part of the educational programs of our students, I feel I have been a part of our student successes, through admitting students in the Graduate Studies program,” she said.
She continued: “I look forward to watching UNMC continue to grow into the world-renowned institution it deserves to be.”
