65 student graduate from UNMC High School Alliance

Sixty-five high school students from 12 metro-area school districts and 21 high schools graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s High School Alliance program on Thursday, May 24.

A graduation ceremony and reception was held at the Michael F. Sorrell Center for Health Science Education on the UNMC campus, where each student received a certificate of completion. For the third year, five students were recognized as Stellar Seniors.

Stellar Seniors are students who have completed the program as juniors and applied for one of five positions in the program during their senior year. Those selected have demonstrated leadership, commitment to the program and are required to complete a semester-long independent study.

The five Stellar Seniors were:

Jordi Castelan, Omaha South; Grace Corrigan, Bennington; Morgan Daffer, Gretna; Sydney Kirkpatrick, Omaha Burke; and Eduardo Mendoza-Lopez, Omaha South.

During the school year, all of the students in the UNMC High School Alliance participate in a range of courses including infectious diseases, anatomy and medical decision-making.

The courses – specifically designed for high school students – are taught by UNMC faculty on the medical center campus. The High School Alliance program provides students a unique hands-on learning experience that is different from what students would have access to at their high school. Most of the courses offered in the program are eligible for dual enrollment college credit.
