I hope your Memorial Day weekend brought some time for enjoying family, friends, and outside activities. Summer is rapidly approaching, and it is the time of year that we say good-bye and thank you to residents and fellows finishing their programs, that we welcome a new group of first-year residents and fellows and that we have college students join the department for summer research projects. Our department is enriched by the many contributions of our trainees and students. Check out how three of our residents earned special recognition in a competition at the national ACP meeting!
As you see in this newsletter, spring is a time when several of our faculty have been recognized at the national as well as local level for contributions to research, education and clinical expertise. The American College of Physicians recognized two of our faculty (Drs. Tom Tape and Jim O’Dell) with the prestigious Masters of ACP distinction, and this makes us very proud! Dr. Bonnema and Dr. Marco Olivera-Martinez also earned national recognition recently. The newsletter also highlights several faculty recognized locally for their teaching. We are fortunate to have faculty so very committed to excellence in education. On June 2, the Department will celebrate its annual research awards at Grand Rounds, so I hope you can join us for that activity (you will read about that in the next newsletter).
Obviously, we are excited to be approaching the time when we start seeing patients in the new Fred and Pamela Buffet Cancer Center and the Werner hospital. Hopefully, you have had the opportunity to tour the building as a part of recent festivities. If not, you will soon be able to visit your colleagues in the Hematology and Oncology division in their new offices there.
Here’s wishing you a wonderful summer season. I know there is always much to do, but hope you will take some moments to recharge. We are better physicians, educators, researchers and staff when we take good care of ourselves.
