Dr. Haider receives Award of Merit, Fellowship status

Hani Haider, Ph.D., professor, orthopaedic surgery and rehabilitation, and director of the Biomechanics and Advanced Surgical Technologies Laboratory, was granted the Award of Merit and the honorary title of "Fellow" by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) during the biannual meeting held in Toronto.

Dr. Haider was recognized for his "outstanding leadership and high productivity in fostering the development and promulgation of surgical implant standards for medical and surgical materials and devices."

The award was presented by Thomas Marsh, chairman of the ASTM board, and is the highest award granted by the society for distinguished service and outstanding contribution in ASTM International committee activities. Marsh praised Dr. Haider for his help in making "our world work better by contributing directly to the safety, quality, and reliability of products worldwide."  

In accepting the award, Dr. Haider confirmed his pride "for Nebraska and UNMC to have its contributions internationally recognized for something so significant as the preclinical testing and safety of patients with artificial joint replacements."

Dr. Haider has previously been the recipient of a number of other major awards including:

— the KLINGER International Research Prize/Austria;

— the HAP Paul Award from the International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA) for innovation in joint replacement technology;

— the Robert Fairer Award;

— the Manny Horowitz Award and the Leroy Wyman Award from ASTM International; and

— the International Standards Organization (ISO) Committee Chairman’s Award for his personal contributions to international standards development on implants for surgery.

Dr. Thompson elected to Society of Hospital Medicine board
The Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) has announced that Rachel Thompson, M.D., associate professor, internal medicine, was elected to its board for a three-year term. Dr. Thompson is medical director for clinical care transitions where she founded the section of hospital medicine.

"It is a true honor to join the board. Hospital medicine is at the front lines of care improvements nationally, and SHM provides the framework and the professional home for our contributions. Together as members of the hospital medicine community, we are making amazing strides for our profession," she said.

Dr. Bennett named executive chair of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee for UNMC/UNO

Robert Bennett, Ph.D., professor, internal medicine, division of diabetes, endocrinology & metabolism (DEM), was appointed to a 12-month term as executive chair of the UNMC/UNO Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), with the option to renew the appointment at the end of the term. The IACUC is responsible for assuring that the institution’s animal care and use program and facilities comply with federal regulations and international accreditation standards. 

Dr. Olivera-Martinez appointed to editorial advisory board

Marco Olivera-Martinez, M.D., associate professor, Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, was appointed to the editorial advisory board for the ACP Gastroenterology Monthly. ACP Gastroenterology Monthly provides news and information for internists about the practice of gastroenterology and reports on the policies, products and activities of ACP.

Dr. Bonnema receives major award for clinical research education

Rachel Bonnema, M.D., associate professor, internal medicine – general medicine, received the 2017 Institute for Clinical Research Education (ICRE) Medical Education Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award on May 16 at the University of Pittsburgh. ICRE is home for the University of Pittsburgh's premier clinical and translational research training programs of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute. The award is given for exceptional achievement and significant contribution to the field of medical education, excellence in mentorship, leadership and scholarship in medical education and outstanding professional and personal development through either traditional channels or innovative approaches.  

Dr. Hussain to serve on ACP committee on medical practice and quality
UNMC's leadership in the conversation around health care transformation continues with the appointment of Tanvir Hussain, M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine, to a three-year term on the Committee on Medical Practice and Quality for the American College of Physicians (ACP). The committee drives ACP's recommendations to Congress on health care policy. ACP is the second largest physician organization in the U.S.

Dr. Hussain said, "At UNMC and Nebraska Medicine, we are helping direct the national transformation toward patient-centered, clinician-driven changes by leading national organizations on medical practice and quality in the U.S."

 Department of Orthopaedic Surgery hosts Hip Society’s Traveling Fellowship

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery served as a host site for The Hip Society's 2017 Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship on April 12-15.

The Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship is open to four young, promising orthopaedic surgeons from North America and throughout the world. Each fellow specializes in adult joint reconstruction and is selected through a rigorous application process.

In addition to their stop in Omaha, this year's five-week tour included the following prestigious orthopaedic programs including:

— Washington University (St. Louis);

— the Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City);

— the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia);

— the Anderson Clinic (Alexandria, Va.); 

— the London Health Science Centre (London, Ontario, Canada); 

— the University of Utah (Salt Lake City); 

— the Joint Implant Surgeons' Center (New Albany, Ohio); 

— the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.); and 

— Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston).

The fellows spent two days at UNMC touring the institution, learning surgical techniques from our surgeons and participating in conferences where they presented on various topics including prosthetic joint infection, total hip arthroplasty approaches, and revision surgeries
