Below two colleagues with 30 years of service share their favorite UNMC memories.

Louise LaFramboise, Ph.D., associate professor and director of the baccalaureate nursing program.

About 10 years ago, I was privileged to accompany our first group of students to China for their clinical exchange. During this trip, the students regularly complained they did not get ice in their drinks at the restaurants in China. As part of our experience in China, we were provided a lecture on the beliefs and practices of Chinese medicine. We learned that the Chinese believed very cold drinks to be unhealthy. On return to the U.S., one of the students was in labor and delivery for a clinical experience. She happened to be caring for a patient from China. The nurse asked the student to get the patient some ice water. Before leaving the room to complete the task, the student asked the patient if she would like ice or no ice. The patient smiled broadly, said “no ice,” and thanked the student profusely. How amazing that our inconvenience in China turned out to support a better experience for the patient!

Thomas Petro, Ph.D., professor, oral biology.
Seeing the success many years later of graduate students, dental students, and dental hygiene students that I have mentored and taught is a collection of my favorite memories.

A complete list of five-, 10-, 20- and 30-year awardees.
