Heidi Keeler, Ph.D., will moderate the event.

EMPOWER and Bridge to Care will host the Schwartz Center Rounds presentation — “Domestic Violence in the Refugee Population” — from 11:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Eppley Science Hall.

Speakers will include:

  • Alana Schriver, refugee specialist, Omaha Public Schools;
  • Elizabeth Ajongo, Sudanese cultural ambassador, Heartland Family Services;
  • Pam Franks, founder and executive director, Embrace the Nations; and
  • Tanya Howard, nurse care coordinator, UniNet.

Heidi Keeler, Ph.D., director of UNMC Office of Community Engagement, will moderate the event.

Following this conference, attendees should be able to:

  • Discuss how health care professionals can better identify and assist survivors of domestic violence in the refugee population.
  • Explain the barriers that exist in prevention, recognition, and treatment of domestic violence in the refugee population.
  • Describe how various cultures define and interpret the term “domestic violence.”

Lunch will be provided for the first 50 attendees.
