Free film screenings during Nebraska Science Festival

Three Omaha Public Schools will host free public screenings of the Academy Award nominated Hidden Figures on April 25 & 26 as part of the Nebraska Science Festival. In addition, the University of Nebraska Medical Center invites the public to an outdoor showing of Inside Out on April 27.

The screenings are among more than 100 activities that are part of this year’s Nebraska Science Festival, is presented by UNMC and runs April 20-29. View the entire festival schedule online at www.nescifest.com. The site allows you to sort events by day, city, age and cost.

Between 6 and 8 p.m., visitors also may see how students created or redesigned exhibits from the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium, learn the benefits of using aquaponics as a way to grow food and enjoy a 30-minute trip into space via their planetarium.

  • Inside Out – April 27 at 8:30 p.m. on the green space at UNMC. Bring your own blankets, lawn chairs and refreshments (non-alcoholic). Prior to the movie, from 7-8 p.m., SciFest fans will have an opportunity to informally visit with representatives from BHECN – The Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska – and learn more about improving access to behavioral health care across the state of Nebraska. In the case of inclement weather, this event will be canceled.

Hidden Figures tells the story of this nation’s race against Russia to put a man in space. During that time, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Known as "human computers," Hidden Figures follows the true stories of three of these women as they rose through the ranks of NASA and calculated the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and helped guarantee his safe return. Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and Katherine Johnson crossed all gender, race and professional lines while their brilliance and desire to dream big firmly cemented them in U.S. history as true American heroes.

The Hidden Figure screening is sponsored by the Omaha STEM Ecosystem, Nebraska Junior Academy of Sciences and Omaha Public School Science Department.

Inside Out tells the story of an 11-year-old Midwestern girl whose world turns upside-down when she and her parents move to San Francisco. Riley's emotions — led by Joy (Amy Poehler) — try to guide her through this difficult, life-changing event. However, the stress of the move brings Sadness (Phyllis Smith) to the forefront. When Joy and Sadness are inadvertently swept into the far reaches of Riley's mind, the only emotions left in Headquarters are Anger, Fear and Disgust.
