Dr. Bayles to lead panel on NIH scientific rigor, reproducibility

Ken Bayles, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for basic science research

The new National Institutes of Health (NIH) guidelines covering rigor and reproducibility have been in effect for a year now, yet researchers are still struggling on how best to address these guidelines in their grants. Fortunately, UNMC faculty, students and staff will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of these guidelines and how to address them in their grant writing.

K awards panel discussion Wednesday

The Vice Chancellor for Research Office also is sponsoring a panel discussion on K Awards on Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Sorrell Center, Room 2018. If you are planning on applying for funding through a K mechanism, join us to hear from others who have successfully received K Awards in the past, or review them on NIH Study Sections, as they give tips on writing this unique type of grant. This event also will be live streamed using http://www.unmc.edu/livevideo/unmc_live1.html.

On Tuesday, the UNMC Vice Chancellor for Research Office will hold a seminar and panel discussion on scientific rigor from 4 to 5 p.m. in the Durham Research Center Auditorium. All are encouraged to attend, especially anyone who is planning on applying for NIH funding in the coming year.

This important session will cover the following topics:

  • Developing the Scientific Premise
  • Writing the Scientific Rigor section
  • Addressing Biological Variables
  • Authentication of Key Biological and/or Chemical Resources
  • How the four items above are being reviewed by NIH study sections

The panel discussion will be led by Ken Bayles, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for basic science research, who will be joined by a number of other faculty who will share their tips for writing these sections, as well as discuss their experiences reviewing them on NIH Study Sections. The panel members will include:

  • Surinder Batra, Ph.D.
  • Ken Bayles, Ph.D.
  • Howard Fox, M.D., Ph.D.
  • Jane Meza, Ph.D.
  • David Oupicky, Ph.D.
  • Nora Sarvetnick, Ph.D.
  • Harold Schultz, Ph.D.
