UNMC and its primary clinical partner, Nebraska Medicine, have been selected to receive the inaugural Summit Award.
The Summit Award is given by the Greater Omaha Chamber, in partnership with the Commerical Real Estate (CRE) Summit. The award will be presented on March 24 during the CRE Summit at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha.
The Summit Award was created to recognize a company, organization, or entity that has made an extraordinary impact on Greater Omaha’s real estate development. Selection is based on several criteria including impact on employment, community and financial investments, technology, and construction within the real estate community. The Summit Award winner was chosen by a committee of top area commercial real estate firm leaders.
“We are pleased to partner with the CRE Summit to showcase those organizations making a difference in our region,” said Randy Thelen, senior vice president of the Greater Omaha Chamber. “Nothing symbolizes growth quite like real estate development — cranes and construction signal forward progress. And no place, no organization is doing more today in our market than the med center.”
“If you say ‘med center’ in our community, everyone knows that you are referring to UNMC/Nebraska Medicine,” said Jerry Slusky, founder and chairman and Barry Zoob, vice chairman of CRE Summit.
“Whether it’s bringing in patients from around the world for cancer treatment, caring for people with Ebola, or conducting cutting-edge research on deadly
diseases, UNMC/Nebraska Medicine is truly one of Omaha’s crown jewels.”
Over the past two decades, the UNMC/Nebraska Medicine campus has been transformed with at least 10 major construction projects. Many of these projects were funded in large part through philanthropic support.
In less than four months, UNMC/Nebraska Medicine will open the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center, a $323 million project that is the largest construction project ever undertaken by the medical center.
Site work is now under way for the new Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning, a $118.9 million building that will change the way health professionals learn new skills and acquire new knowledge. The center, which is expected to be completed late in 2018, will house UNMC’s iEXCELâ„ (Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning) program, which will expose students to interprofessional clinical simulation training exercises, surgical skills training and realistic environments through virtual and augmented reality, holographic and visualization techniques.
