Maneesh Jain, Ph.D.

This profile is part of a series to highlight the researchers who will be honored at a ceremony for UNMC’s 2016 Scientist Laureate, Research Leadership, Distinguished Scientist and New Investigator Award recipients.

The Distinguished Scientist Award

The Distinguished Scientist Award — which is sponsored by the chancellor — recognizes researchers who have been among the most productive scientists at UNMC during the past five years.

  • Name: Maneesh Jain, Ph.D.
  • Title: Associate professor, UNMC Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, College of Medicine
  • Joined UNMC: December 2001
  • Hometown: Tundla/Delhi, India

Research focus:
Pancreatic cancer

The goal of my research is:
Pancreatic cancer epitomizes the complexities of tumor microenvironment (TME). The overall goal of our research is to understand the intricate cross-talk between cancer and stromal cells and exploit this knowledge for designing more effective diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for this lethal malignancy.

My research will make a difference because it will provide novel avenues for selective modulation of TME to improve the delivery and efficacy of chemotherapeutic and immunotherapeutic agents. Our research will also lead to the discovery of TME-based circulating biomarkers like exosomes and extracellular matrix proteins that can be used for early detection and predicting response to therapy.

The best advice I’ve ever been given is:
“Every individual has strengths and weaknesses. It is up to you what you want to focus upon. To get the best out of a person, you have to keep your ego aside and focus on individual’s strengths.”

This is what Surinder Batra, Ph.D., my mentor and chair, told me when I first took up the faculty position. Like all good things, it can be challenging to practice at times; but this advice has helped me become a better team player and is the reason for many of the collaborative projects that I have developed.

Three things you may not know about me

  • I am equally passionate about several other disciplines of science and arts: geology, paleontology, archeology, astrophysics, cosmology, ancient history, Hindi poetry and of course music
  • I am obsessed with the interplay of sun and clouds in Nebraska skies. I have clicked more than 1,500 pictures of morning and evening sky colors of Omaha with my iPhone.
  • I am a big fan of Big B (Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, Hindi movie superstar) and The Oracle of Omaha (Mr. Warren Buffett) and wish I can meet them some day.
