The human brain is the topic of the next Omaha Science Cafe being held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Slowdown, 729 N. 14th St.
Matthew Rizzo, M.D., the Reynolds Professor and Chair of the UNMC Department of Neurological Sciences, will discuss emerging opportunities in neurosciences research, teaching, patient care and community outreach throughout Nebraska and the Great Plains, to advance mind and brain health across the lifespan. Dr. Rizzo also is director of the Mind & Brain Health Lab at UNMC.
Dr. Rizzo received his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore. He completed his neurology residency and fellowship in behavioral neurology and cognitive neuroscience at the University of Iowa.
Prior to joining the UNMC faculty in 2014, Dr. Rizzo was professor at the University of Iowa College of Medicine and vice chair of transitional and clinical research in the department of neurology. He also was director of the aging brain and mind initiative at the university.
Currently Dr. Rizzo is seeing patients with memory disorders and participating in several studies related to addressing behavioral consequences of aging and neurological disorders.
Science Cafes involve a face-to-face conversation with a scientist about current science topics. They are open to everyone (21 and older) and take place in casual settings like pubs and coffeehouses. Each meeting is organized around an interesting topic of conversation. A scientist gives a brief presentation followed by a Q-and-A period.
