Two UNMC College of Nursing faculty and four students were among those honored recently at the 2016 Nurse of the Year Awards at Embassy Suites La Vista. The awards, which were presented by Methodist Health System, were given by Omaha Magazine and the March of Dimes — Nebraska and Western Iowa Market.
The nominees were recognized for exceptional patient care, compassion and service. The event celebrates the nursing profession and creates awareness of the recent strides made in the growing field. Twenty-four nurses were selected for special recognition.
The Academic Excellence Award was presented to Kathleen Duncan, Ph.D., associate professor, UNMC College of Nursing Lincoln Division. Over Dr. Duncan’s career, she has been a key advocate for patients, students, and health care professionals. She also has been part of a team that has received local and federal grants focusing on improving the quality of life of heart failure patients by promoting exercise. Dr. Duncan has been invited by a variety of health care organizations locally and globally to present on leadership and quality improvement concepts.

The UNMC student nurses recognized at the gala were Kyle McClellen, Miranda Meyers, Yanet Rouillard and Marion Techentien.
