New faculty spotlight: Aishwarya Patil, M.D.

Aishwarya Patil, M.D.

Aishwarya Patil, M.D., is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Aishwarya Patil, M.D.
  • Hometown: Satara, Maharashtra, India
  • New title and department at UNMC: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

Research/Professional Interests:

  • Neurorehabilitation
  • Amputee rehabilitation

How I fell in love with physical medicine and rehabilitation:
I grew up in an Air Force family in India. While in medical school, I visited a veterans center which cared for patients with traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, and for amputees. As I watched their transition from being “airborne to chairborne,” I knew I had found my calling. Since physical medicine and rehabilitation was not a well established field in India, I could not think of any better place than the United States for my training.

Degrees:

  • M.D., Government Medical College, Miraj, Maharashtra, India

Memberships:

  • American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
  • American Academy of Neurorehabilitation
  • American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I started taking piano lessons in the hope to better understand the role of music in neurorehabilitation.
  • I visit at least one national park in the U.S. every year.
  • I dream of running a marathon someday.
