Dr. Rennard to speak at lunch lecture

Stephen Rennard, M.D., an internationally-known researcher and UNMC’s inaugural Scientist Laureate, will give a presentation today entitled “Research Opportunities in the Pharmaceutical Industry.”

Dr. Rennard will present from noon to 1 p.m. at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater, Room 3010.

Dr. Rennard’s presentation is part of Graduate Studies’ Lunch & Learn professional development series. Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to bring a “brown bag” lunch to the presentations, held the third Thursday of each month during fall and spring semesters.

“This is a revamping of the old transferable skills evening series,” said Pamela Carmines, Ph.D., assistant dean for graduate studies. “The new series gives us a broader palette that allows us to focus on a variety of professional skills and career-related information.”

One of the world’s leading experts on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Dr. Rennard is Larson Professor of Medicine and also now serves as vice president, early clinical development, and chief clinical scientist at AstraZeneca, a multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Cambridge, England.

In a story last year in UNMC Today, Dr. Rennard said his move to England to work for a pharmaceutical company was “an adventure.” Now, he is enthusiastic about sharing with students and postdocs his insight about what it’s like to do research in the pharmaceutical industry and the kind of job opportunities that exist in that employment sector.
