State legislators tour UNMC

State Sen. Jim Smith, representing Legislative District 14 in Sarpy County, recently invited several of his legislative colleagues and their spouses, as well as a legislative candidate, to visit and tour UNMC.

The tour, hosted by UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., included a lunch with UNMC leadership, visit to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center construction site, a shuttle tour of campus and an experiential overview of iEXCEL technology.

“We wanted to showcase, for some of my colleagues from the rural part of Nebraska, the impact this facility has for all of Nebraska and all Nebraskans,” Sen. Smith said. “We are very proud of all that is happening at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.”

Sen. Smith added that the lawmakers are appreciative of the economic impact UNMC and the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center have on Nebraska.

Attendees included Sen. Smith and his wife, Ruth Smith; State Sen. Curt Friesen (District 34, which includes Grand Island) and Nancy Friesen; State Sen. Burke Harr (District 8 in Douglas County); State Sen. Dan Hughes (District 44, which includes Red Willow, Dundy, Chase, Hitchcock, Hayes, Perkins, Frontier, Gosper, Furnas and Harlan counties) and Josie Hughes; State Sen. Jim Scheer (District 19, including the city of Norfolk, Madison county and part of Stanton county) and Kris Scheer; State Sen. Matt Williams (District 36, including Custer, Dawson and Buffalo counties) and Susan Williams, who serves on UNMC’s Board of Counselors; and candidate for Legislative District 41 Tom Briese, representing the counties of Antelope, Boone, Garfield, Greeley, Howard, Pierce, Sherman, Valley and Wheeler.
