Research/Professional Interests:
I specialize in the treatment of multiple myeloma and related plasma cell dyscrasias. My clinical, translational, and basic science research efforts are focused on multiple myeloma. In particular, my laboratory is focused on the development of novel agents for myeloma. From a clinical research perspective, I am interested in the incorporation of novel agents into the post-transplant maintenance setting as well as in the newly diagnosed and relapsed/refractory settings.

How I fell in love with medical research:
I fell in love with laboratory research when I was an undergraduate working on an honors research project in organic chemistry. I knew that I was also interested in pursuing a career in medicine, and I wanted a career which melded both interests. I therefore pursued a dual degree program through the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Iowa. My interest in multiple myeloma began as a hematology/oncology fellow, and it was during this time that I began to develop my laboratory program focused on drug development for myeloma. I find my career as a physician-scientist to be incredibly satisfying, as I can fully appreciate the bench-to-bedside as well as bedside-to-bench discoveries that culminate in improved outcomes for patients.

Three things people may not know about me:

  • If I hadn’t pursued chemistry and medicine, I would have become a professional flute player. I still love to play and am always looking for small groups and ensembles with which to play.
  • I earned a black belt in Tae Kwon Do as a child.
  • My guilty pleasure is watching “Dancing with the Stars” and “So You Think You Can Dance,” even though I have absolutely no dance experience.
