Lynne Walz, running to represent Nebraska Legislative District 15 (which includes Fremont, Neb., and Dodge County), took a tour of the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit with Nebraska Medicine’s Kate Boulter, UNMC’s Anne Bowen and vice chancellor for external affairs Bob Bartee as part of a recent visit to UNMC.
Walz, who said she eagerly accepted an invitation to tour from Kenneth Bayles, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for basic science research, met for lunch with assorted UNMC leaders, and sat for an overview of UNMC’s priorities and outstanding programs.
She later took part in a tour of UNMC’s Staphylococcal research and the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit.
Walz, who is running in part to improve and more efficiently provide services for the developmentally disabled, said she was impressed with the level of competence displayed throughout the med center.
For example, “I didn’t realize how prepared these folks were, in the Biocontainment Unit, not only in the moment of crisis, but that they had been prepared for the last 10 years.”
