Fostering the Future, a student and faculty-led organization at UNMC, will be hosting “Breakfast for Blankets” from 7-10 a.m. Monday at the Sorrell Center Commons.
The organization will provide numerous different breakfast foods and will accept free-will donations in support of its annual Blanket Project. All donations will be used to purchase fleece for the Blanket Project, where UNMC students, faculty and community members make fleece blankets that will be donated to various charities throughout Omaha.
In addition to information on health and health care, Fostering the Future helps support the foster youth in Omaha and surrounding areas, as well as provide them with knowledge focused on gaining independence as they transition out of the foster care system.
The Blanket Project supports organizations such as the Omaha Police Department, the Lydia House, Project Harmony and the Sienna Francis House. All of the organizations help foster children at some point during the transition period.
The Blanket Project will take place at the UNMC College of Nursing on Nov. 22 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The goal for 2016 is to tie and donate 275 blankets. These blankets are not inexpensive; they cost on average $10-15 per blanket. Donations of clean (no pet hair or smoke) new fleece will be accepted.
