Leadership Nebraska tours UNMC
The current class of Leadership Nebraska visited UNMC on Sept. 16. Leadership Nebraska is a program designed for current and future Nebraska leaders to view the economic and political challenges and opportunities that face Nebraska. It’s mission is to identify, educate, communicate with, inspire and engage Nebraska’s current and emerging leaders for the well-being of the state of Nebraska.

After a campus overview, the group toured the Biocontainment Unit, the UNMC Center for Drug Discovery and Lozier Center for Pharmacy Sciences and Education and the 3D printing lab in the McGoogan Library with members of the UNMC Makers Club.

UNMC College of Nursing Lincoln Division students participated in Streets Alive, an outdoor movement festival that celebrates active lifestyles and healthy nutrition with great health resources, fitness fun, music, dance and food. Participating students included Megan Palmer, Kristen Sanjem, Andrea Fiala, Maggie Healy and Dakota Sonderup and Sharon Baker, Lincoln Division instructor. They screened more than 100 participants for blood sugar, blood pressure and body mass index and worked with the Asian Community Center and Malone Center to help get their clients in need access to care.

College of Public Health signs MOU with Mexican university

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed recently between UNMC’s College of Public Health and the University Anahuac Xalapa (UAX) College of Medicine, Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico, opening the door for academic and research collaborations for students and faculty. This is the first time the college has signed an agreement with a university in Mexico.

The UNMC delegation included: Jane Meza, Ph.D., senior associate dean and chair of biostatistics; Paul Estabrooks, Ph.D., the Harold M. Maurer Distinguished Chair, and chair of health promotion, social & behavioral health; Amr Soliman, M.D., Ph.D., assistant dean and professor of epidemiology; and Armando De Alba, M.D., instructor, health promotion, social & behavioral health.

The UAX delegation included: Luis Linares Romero, Ph.D., chancellor; Elì Marìn Illescas, provost; Bernardo Vera, M.D, dean of the College of Medicine; and Omar Torres, director of external affairs.

UNMC’s delegation then participated in a conference with Alejandro Escobar Mesa, M.D., director of the Public Health Department of the State of Veracruz. More than 150 participants, including medical students, faculty and staff from UAX, attended the presentations.

UAX is a private educational institution of higher learning in Mexico that was founded in 1964. It is considered one of the top 10 medical schools in Mexico and is part of the Anahuac Universities Network, which consists of 10 institutions in Mexico, one each in Chile and Spain, and two each in Italy and the U.S.

UNMC ID card office closed Wednesday
The ID card office, located in the Student Life Center, will be closed Wednesday for a furniture move as part of the ongoing renovations at the center. The office will reopen Thursday in the same location with its usual operating hours.
