New faculty spotlight: Kara Markin, M.D.

Kara Markin, M.D.

Kara Markin, M.D., is a new faculty member at UNMC.

  • Name: Kara Markin, M.D.
  • Hometown: Omaha
  • Title and department at UNMC: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Internal Medicine

Research/Professional Interests:

  • Women’s health

How I fell in love with medicine:
While working for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) in Patagonia, Chile, I decided to teach search and rescue. I returned to Omaha to get the obligatory EMT training, but after that decided to become a paramedic. While training as a paramedic, I always wanted to know what happened to the patients I took to the emergency department. Nearly 10 years later, I’m taking care of them!

Degrees:

  • M.D., UNMC
  • Residency, internal medicine, UNMC

Three things people may not know about me:

  • I directed an environmental nonprofit.
  • I was an English major.
  • I love NPR’s “Radiolab.”
