UNMC faculty part of UNO symposium on Vietnam War

More than 50 years after America’s official involvement in Vietnam, questions remain about how that war shaped us politically, culturally, and socially, at the national, state and local levels.

On Oct. 27 and 28, the University of Nebraska at Omaha will host a special event exploring the impact of the Vietnam War. The symposium will feature experts, including many who courageously served the U.S. in Vietnam, discussing the lessons and legacies of the war from a variety of perspectives.

“The Vietnam War: Lessons and Legacies” is free and open to the public. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend.

On Oct. 28, UNMC faculty will participate in a 1 p.m. panel titled, “Healing the Veteran: Military Medicine and Civilian Medicine,” which will feature stories of veteran health professionals who turned their experiences in Vietnam into helping civilians and veterans back home.

Participants in the panel are Bob Kerrey, former U.S. senator, Nebraska governor and Navy Seal; W. Kendall McNabney, M.D., University of Missouri Kansas City, School of Medicine; Bruce Buehler, M.D., UNMC professor of pediatrics and genetics; and Mary Carlson, UNMC nurse practitioner and former clinic nurse manager. The panel will be moderated by Robert Muelleman, M.D., professor and past chair of the UNMC Department of Emergency Medicine.
