Joe Sisson, M.D., will speak at the inaugural Professional Development Lunch & Learn event from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater.
Dr. Sisson, chief of the internal medicine division of pulmonary, critical care, sleep and allergy, will speak on “The Use of Figures to Effectively Communicate Research Ideas and Results.”
The series, which is open to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, will be held on the third Thursday of each month.
“This is a revamping of the old transferable skills evening series,” said Pamela Carmines, Ph.D., assistant dean for graduate studies. “The topics will still include transferable skills, but the new series gives us a broader palette that allows us to focus on a variety of skills and career-related information.”
The series also has moved to noon, Dr. Carmines said, to accommodate students with children who may have had conflicts attending the evening series.
The schedule for the new series includes:
- Sept. 15: “The Use of Figures to Effectively Communicate Research Ideas and Results,” Dr. Sisson, internal medicine-pulmonary.
- Oct. 20: “Maximizing Writing, Minimizing Stress,” G. Travis Adams, Ph.D., English, University of Nebraska at Omaha.
- Nov. 17: “Research Opportunities in the Pharmaceutical Industry,” Steven Rennard, M.D., internal medicine-pulmonary.
- Jan. 19: “Converting Your CV into a Resume,” Dr. Carmines, cellular and integrative physiology.
- Feb. 16: “Time Management: We All Have Our Own Method. What’s Yours?” Laura Bilek, Ph.D., physical therapy.
- March 16: “Personality Types in the Workplace,” Vicki Kennel, Ph.D., research administration, College of Allied Health Professions
- April 20: “Negotiating Essentials,” Rowen Zetterman, M.D., director, faculty mentorship program.
All events will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Eppley Science Hall Amphitheater, with lunch available at 11:45 a.m.
