Dan Quick, a legislative candidate for District 35 in Grand island, toured UNMC in August to find out more about the medical center.
Quick, who is married to a registered nurse and has worked at the city of Grand Island’s power plant for more than 25 years, said that advances in the medical field — such as the simulation demonstrations he took part in — could help working families not only in terms of health care, but also by creating jobs and growing the economy in Nebraska, a theme of his campaign.
Quick met with university leaders including Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external affairs, Dan DeBehnke, M.D., Nebraska Medicine CEO, Dele Davies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs, and others. His tour included a stop at the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit. Angela Vasa, clinical program coordinator, led the tour.
Quick said UNMC was important as an employer in the state.
“I’m running because I want to help working families,” he said. “I know how much they’re struggling in this state, and I’d like to try to help them by growing jobs. We need some more skilled labor training, not only in the medical community, but welders, machinists, we need to grow those jobs as well. I want to help create living wages for those workers so they can provide for their families.”
