Larry Scherer, a candidate for the Nebraska State Legislature in District 21 in northwest Lincoln and Lancaster County, toured the UNMC campus and met with university leaders on Monday.
Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external affairs, and Ron Withem, senior associate vice president for university affairs & director of governmental relations, led the tour for Scherer, who also met with Dele Davies, M.D., vice chancellor for academic affairs, Julie Sebastian, Ph.D., dean of the UNMC College of Nursing and others.
“Health and safety are huge issues,” Scherer said. “We have some very low-income areas in the district I’m running for in Northwest Lincoln, in which access to health care in different modes is very important.”
Scherer was given a demonstration of the interactive digital wall, and he also stopped in the library to learn about the new 3D printing technology available at UNMC.
“In terms of economics of the state, health care is just critical,” he said. “So this is an important learning experience for me.”
As someone who has spent his entire career advocating for education and whose wife is a registered nurse, Scherer said he understood UNMC’s importance to the state.
“Education is my top priority, and that medical education and research is just critical to the future of the state,” he said. “I’ll always prioritize these types of concerns if I am elected.”
